An underscore in a latex string works fine in this example: \\(m_\alpha\\),<br>
It also works fine in this example: \\(m_\alpha\\) and \\(\xi_{\alpha}\\),<br>
But it breaks here: \\(\dot{\vec{x}}_\alpha\\).
